(Per Press Association.) Death of a JournalistWellington, Dec. 3, Mr Richard W akelin, late editor and proprietor of the “Wairarapa Standard,” died at Greytown last evening, aged 66. Arrived. The Lady Agnes, barque, has arrived from New York. Fire at AshburtonAshburton, Dec. 3, Cookson’s stables and Tail’s saddlery shop were destroyed by fire at half past two this morning. Saunders’ buildings, one of the largest blocks in town, had a narrow escape of being destroyed, the danger being chiefly averted by the efforts of the Fire Brigade. The origin of the fire, further than that it is supposed to have started in Tait’s shop, is shrouded in mystery. T,ho insurances were i—Cookson s stables and cottage at rear, £BOO in the Union Office; Tait, £250 in the Norwich. Cookson estimates his dead loss at £SOO, and Tait his at £250. The WeatherA little rain has fallen to-day and yesterday. Bain is much wanted now for the crops. The Arrow Suicide Dunedin, Dec. 3. Later news regarding E. De Laperelle s suicide states that he set fire to a building on his farm and then shot himself. After the fire was extinguished his body was found shockingly burned. He leaves a wife and three young children. He was an old settler in the Arrow district. Riflemen disputingThe Union Company’s handsome trophy, won by the City Guards Team at Nelson last year, has been fired for by individual members in a series of competitions. It had to be won by the member first securing 21 points. "Volunteer Provo, with 19, claims two disputed points, in consequence of one man who held a prominent position being disqualified. The Match Committee refused to allow a protest, and law proceedings are threatened.
