South Canterbury Times. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1881. NEWS OF THE DAY.

Dr Wilkins, oculist and auriat, will arrive in Timaru on Monday. His advertisement above gives further particulars. A man named Green has died of strychnine poisoning at Beefton. There is no evidence of how it was administered to him.

About noon on Tuesday a most terrific hailstorm passed over the Alford Forest district. It came up from the south-west, but only lasted twenty minutes. The hailstones varied in size from one and a half inches to three and a quarter. The fruit trees were considerably stripped and a number of windows in the hotel, school, and private houses were more or less damaged. A meeting of stockowners and others took place at Christchurch yesterday to consider the desirability of forming a com pany for freezing and exporting meat, butter and cheese. An influential committee was appointed to collect information and to report to an adjourned meeting.

At a late hour on Thursday night the Ashburton railway and traffic bridge was reported to be on fire. The station master went to the place on an engine and found thet the flames had got a good hold of the woodwork. With some assistance he managed to put the fire out. The fire is supposed to have originated through some careless smoker throwing down a match and igniting dry horse-dung lying on the bridge. Moral—Sweep such bridges now and again.
