MAIL NEWS.

The steamers Wakatipu and Albion from Australia bring the following items of news :

Archbishop Groke, in an address upon the present crisis in Ireland, strongly denounced the manifesto recently issued by the Land League, and advocated payment of fair rent. , A conference of labor delegates, held at Dublin, terminated on September 17. Mr Parnell announced that arrangements had been effected between the farmers and laborers; the latter would now throw their whole energy into the work of theJLeague. The title of the organisation has been altered to the “ Irish National Land League and Laborers Industrial Union.” Messrs Parnell and O’Connor were requested to visit America during the winter. The former said his services were more required in Ireland. Mr O’Connor said he would most likely be able to go during the next fortnight. Subscriptions amounting to £1286, including £lO4 from the United States League, were announced. A land law agitation has been started in Scotland. On some estates in the north the tenantry refused to pay rents unless 25 per cent were deducted. Being refused, the rents were not paid at all. Meanwhile, a Land League is being formed in Scotland, with a view to organise general resistance. A special Committee has been appointed by the Farmers Alliance to prepare a Land Bill for England and Scotland. It has been decided to prepare a Bill for England only at first, and afterwards make the necessary modifications to render it suitable to Scotland.

Shipments of meat from Australia have not been so profitable as was expected. The first mutton landed from the Protos fetched 6d to 61d per lb, but soon afterwards the market was glutted by additional supplies ex Cuzco and heavy consignments from the United States. Prices fell to s£d ; butchers would only give 4d to s|d per lb. There is not much prospect that the quantities still unsold will do much better. The butchers say they cannot sell, as the freezing takes away all flavor from the meat, and it goes rotten immediately it thaws. The Europa left Melbourne last week with the largest shipment of meat yet sent from Australia.

The hostility displayed by the native population against the French occupation of Tunis is so bitter that the Republican General in command, by way of retaliation, is resorting to great severities. A number of Arab insurgents have been executed and their heads publicly exposed in the capital. Baron James Rothschild died at Paris on September 22. Great indignation is expressed by the American Press at the alleged attempt to burn the Canard steamer. They urge the most severe prosecution of persons found guilty of such cowardly acts on mercantile vessels. The enquiry into the case of the Bothnia has led to the arrest of several longshoremen, who were heard uttering threats of what would occur when the ship got to sea. The impression is that these petty attempts to injure British ships is a cheap device of the Fenians to keep up the “ war upon England ” excitement.
