A dish of splendid peas, the first of the I season, were shown in Mr T. Amos’ window 1 to-day. They were grown by Mr J. R. Stansell. A trout weighing 15pbs was on exhibibition at Mr Price’s shop, near the railway station to-day. It attracted a large amount of attention. It was caught by Mr Findlay in the Temuka river. Chinese working deep leads in the icinity of Conglomerate, Palmer Eiver am said to be making £lO per man weekly. A capital judge of horseflesh in New Zealand regards Somnus as the best two year-old ever seen in the southern colony, and thinks that if he retains his form he will be found quite capable of clipping the wings of Darebin, Somerset and other cracks. Sir Modred he considers quite as good a horse as Progress up to a mile and a half, but not quite so good a stayer. Idalium was a good colt until he went wrong last autumn, but as he has quite recovered he may again show good form, Hilarious was a good two-year-old, but uncertain, and as a three he was only third-class.
