SPORTING NOTES.
The latest number of the “ Australasian” received by the mail, has the following notes on the current betting ; In betting circles, the Maribyrong Plate has attracted a deal of notice. Segenhoe is nominally first favourite, at 100 to 11, but Iphigenia, Prince George, Mistake, Morpeth, and others, have met with so much support that his position has been weakened. There is not much alteration in the Derby betting, except that Darebin is perhaps a trifle firmer, and Somerset, the Duke and Spinningdale are all in demand. The scratching of Progress for the Cup has strengthened the position of Duchess, about whom 100 to 15 has been accepted, and of the others the most in demand are Waxy, The Duke, Savanaka,Sardonyx,Somerset, Waterloo Creswick, and Canary- Bandalbion’a owner has backed his horse to win several thousands at 100 to 1. Sir Modred, with sweaters on, went once round the tan track, and was joined by Somnus, when they strode along for nearly three more rounds, and pulling on to the outer track at the mile post, they finished a very strong gallop on the outer circle. The Derby colt seemed to be able to run over his companion, but everything was in his favor, he being stripped. On Wednesday Sir Modred and Somnus went twice round the outer circle at about half pace. The Derby colt went very gay. On Thursday Sir Modred did useful work. Somnus cantered to the mile post, and was then set going.
Hilarious, who started 50 yards behind him, gradually overhauled him, and the pair finished together. On Friday Somnus, Sir Modred, and Hilarious strode along for good work, and ran once round the ground in 2 min 38secs. The Cup horse went in great form.
