LEVELS ROAD BOARD.
[to the editor.]
Sir, —Having applied to the Levels Hoad Board for a small amount of shingle to put on a recently formed road to my property the said request was refused on account of want of funds. If this was the case of course the Board could not entertain the idea, but all the same it is very necessary that hilly, clayey roads, where heavy grain is carried, should be shingled, as the danger to shaft horses with heavy loads is great, and must entail a loss to the farmer in case of any accident. It must hare been noticed that the Board entertain an idea of making a private buggy road—or pro, puUicct as the case way he-=*for a resident on The Brothers, That pro perty has already oost the Board thousands in making a very difficult road under the supervision of Mr Roberts, and as this road gives access to all the property through leading spurs it ought to meet most qf the the requirements of the owners. This road would never have been made, but for a great quantity of land under cultivation, and of course access was wanted for carrying away the produce. But the land proved fq fio unsuited for grain growing and therefore it must, through force of circumstances, relapse into a purely grazing estate, so I, as a ratepayer do not see why we should be heavily taxed and told there are no funds to keep existing roads in repair, whUp the floayd enterUqq idea of making hye-ways to a property which has a good com munipatjon road five miles from Albury llailway Station. I should think ft would be more advisable to have the
present; formed roads kept in repair and let bye-roads wait till tbe Board and district have funds to spare to amuse themselves with a little extra work and expense.—l am, &c., W. JOHNSON NEWTON.
