lire monthly meeting of the Caledonian Lodge of Freemasons takes place this evening at the Hall, Bank street. Timaru has been very gay to*day especially in the vicinity of “The Ship,” the appearance of the streets being enlivened by a number of citizens and a larger number of visitors in the brightest of war paint, and the air vibrating at frequent intervals with the strains of an excellent brass band. The producing cause of this unwonted aspect of this usually very sober place is the holding in the ncighbor--1 boihood of the annual weekly drill of the

Canterbury regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry, who are mustered here for that purpose from Temuka and Christchurch. The northern contingent, some 50 in number, came down yesterday, under the command of Captain Slater, by train, and the Temuka contingent marched in last evening also. The regimental band, numbering 16, is composed chiefly of youths, but their playing is most creditable and is said to be superior to any other in the colony except it be the Invercargill one. The full muster on parade is between 80 and 90, and the turn out and march through the streets to the parade ground at Saltwater Creek is a sight such as is not often seen in Timaru. The corps are "camped” at the Ship Hotel during their stay.
