NEW ZEALAND.

(Per Press Association.) Law and PoliceAuckland, Sept. 29. Mr Barstow, R.M., has resigned. The police have no clue to the perpetrator of the robbery at Arthur’s. Seventeen cases are set down for hearing at the criminal sessions of the Supreme Court, which opens on Monday. They include rape, indecent assault (two cases), defacing currency, sending a letter threatening to murder, robbery with violence (two cases), breaking and entering (two cases), and larceny (eight cases). Shipping. Arrived—Zealandia, ship, from London. The Native Difficulty. New Plymouth, Sept. 29. With reference to Daniels’ story re encounter with u Maori at Rahotu, it may bo stated that Daniels is a respectable young man and his story perfectly reliable. Ho could have no object in inventing it. Daniels with his brother has recently purchased land at Rahotu, and they were engaged until the event happened in preparing their land for tillage. They had several men employed fencing their land. Daniels is not a man to be easily frightened by one or two Maories, being powerfully built, neither is he one likely to invent a story of the kind. His statement can no doubt be easily verified if necessary Daniels, I believe, comes from Wanganui. Referring to Mr Parris’ contradiction concerning Titokuwaru’s people leaving their settlement for Parihaka the “Taranaki Herald’’ says “ We obtained our information from Mr Edmonds, the architect, who says he saw the natives with their bullock carts inland of Nor raanby on the road to Parihaka. On reaching Normanby Mr Edmonds mentioned the circumstances to Mr McGregor, landlord of the Normanby Hotel, who informed him the natives had left Mawhiliwhiti with Titokowaru for Parihaka, Mr Edmonds (late of Wellington) is a thoroughly reliable authority.’’

Electoral. Hawbra, Sept. 29. Mr George Hutchison, barrister of Wanganui, has decided not to contest Waitotara. He announces that he will contest Egmont with Major Atkinson. Wanganui, Sept. 29. Mr Ballance announces himself a can. didate for Wanganui, and no opposition is expected. Wellington, Sept. 27. Mr George Beetham announces that he will contest Wairarapa North. Racing. At a meeting of the Racing Club last night it was decided to make both the hurdle races handicaps. A letter was read from Mr Stephenson, of Dunedin, who had purchased Mata, asking that the disqualification might be removed from that horse. The Stewards declined to agree with the request. The meeting is fixed for February 2 and 3.
