THE EDITH EE ID IN TROUBLE. ■Wellington, Sept. 14. The schooner Edith Reid experienced very bad weather on the passage from Timaru. The captain reports light variable weather until reaching Kaikoura, when she was becalmed. At 1 a.m. on Monday the wind freshening from the south-west, got under weigh. The wind increased to a hard gale, and blew with terrific force. While the main sail was being reefed a ; sudden gust carried the foreyard away, taking with it the topsail and topgallant sail. Hove the vessel to for several hours, when the wind taking off, cleared away the wreckage, and set sail and cane on for Wellington. When entering the Heads the gaff was carried away during a gale, the sea running mountains high.
