South Canterbury Times, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1881. NEWS OF THE DAY.
SECOND EDITION
Owing to a pressure of news and advertisements we are obliged to hold over our leading article. The last block included in Messrs Jones and Peters’ breakwater contract was laid to-day. ' Several monoliths remain to be Idled in before the last section of the breakwater is completed, however.
At the E.M. Court this morning a first offender, charged with drunkenness, was. dismissed with a caution.
Messrs George Priest and Co, will hold an extensive sale of general merchandise at their rooms, to-morrow at two o’clock. The sale will afford an excellent opportunity for retail dealers replenishing their stock. Particulars of the lines to be put under the hammer will be found in our advertising columns. The Victoria Lodge, Protestant Alliance Friendly Society held its usual fortnightly meeting in the Sophia street II all last evening, the W.M., Bro Kent, in the chair. The Lodge was opened punctually at 8 o’clock with customary formalities. A goodly number of the brethren were present. Preliminary business matters having been satisfactorily disposed of six candidates for admission were initiated and introduced to the Lodge. Several honorary members were proposed and accepted subject to the regulations of the Order, the initiation of whom will take place next summoned meeting, 21st insb. The remaining business having been disposed of and the Secretary instructed to endeavor to obtain fresh supply of governing laws from headquarters, the Lodge was closed by the W.M. The “ 1 irates ” drew a good house last night, but the audience had a considerable disappointment in store for them. Miss Leaf, who previously had taken the part of Euth so charmingly, was not quite well, and having a heavy part to-night reserved her powers for it, so that “ Euth ” had to be entrusted to a substitute, Mr Riverton, who played Little Buttercup in “Pinafore.” He made up and acted the part very well, and on the whole acquitted himself very creditably, though of course he could not sing the music except the simpler portions. The rest of the characters were taken as on previous occasions here, Mr Wentworth being the King and Mr O’Neil the MajorGeneral. The .opera went very smoothly and the audience were well satisfied. Several of the songs and choruses were encored. This evening “ Les Cloches de, Corneville,” new to Timaru, will be produced. This opera hr.s gained golden opinions whenever it has been produced and we may be sure that Mr Cary’s company are capable of presenting it as well as any company likely to visit us for a long time. Mr Cary last night expressed his thanks for the support he had received in Timaru, and hoped he would have a full house to-night to hear the new opera.
Polling for the election of three Councillors to fill the vacant seats at the Council caused by the retirement of Messrs Gibson, Jackson and Greenup, commenced at 9 o’clock Ibis morning. There was very lilt 1 a excitement although sundry express vans labelled, “ vote for so and so.” paraded the streets all day, and - their drivers did their level best to pick up stray voters and convey them to the scene of operations, while a little crowd of the partisans of the various aspirants for municipal honors gathered about the doors of the Council Chambers, and tried hard to induce passers by to walk in and help secure the return of the “right man.” Owing to the poll not closing until (> p.m., we are of course unable to give the result of the day’s doings. Colonel Brett committed a patent “ bull” the other day in the House of Lords. When speaking to a motion condemning Government for s ending back Sir Julius Vogel’s letter, be said that “ the usual course among gentlemen was to return insulting letters unopened.” It is said that Mr Joseph Ivess-having ascertained that Mr F. P. O’Reilly was th writer of the letter in the “ Ashburton Guardian ” of last Friday which reflected on his character, is dbout to proceed against that gentleman for criminal libel. Meanwhile, a writ for £IOOO damages has been served upon the registered proprietor of the “ Guardian,” Mr Max Friedlandcr. The Temperance Hotel experiment at Christchurch has been so successful, that though opened a few months only, it is deemed necessary to enlarge it, and. fifty rooms are to be added to it to meet the demand for accommodation. It will then be one of the finest buildings in town. Southern Afghanistan may now be said to be completely under the authority of Ayolvb Khan. On the 30th July he followed up bis victory of the 27th by entering and taking possession of Candahar. Ihe change of authority was very readily accepted by the people, and latest reports state trade was resumed and everything remains guiet in the city. It is generally understood that no further assistance will be rendered to the Ameer by the Indian Government.
