AN ABYSS.

A remarkable occurrence is recorded by the “Argus ” as haring taken place sit Ballarat on the morning of August IG. AMr and Mrs Schott, who occupy a shop in Sturt street, noticed during the previous evening a great and unusual noise, which bore some resemblance to thunder, and seemed to shake the building they occupied. Mr Schott rose early but fortunately not before daylight, and went to his back-yard. He had scarcely stepped outside when he noticed a vast black abyss within 18in of where he stood. A remarkable subsidence had taken place on what was subsequently ascertained to have been the old shaft of the British Lion Mining Company, which had heeen partially and carelessly filled in. Mrs Schott had a fortunate escape, for it appeared that she had been working for some hours on the spot mi here the subsidence occurred up to within a short time of the occurrence. The tubs, boiler, etc., which she had been using were left on the spot and were precipitated into the abyss, which was about 150 or 250 ft deep.
