SUDDEN DEATH.
Mr Thomas Watkins (father of the late Mr E. Watkins, chemist), Main South Eoad, died very suddenly at the residence of his daughter-in law, Tirnaru. The absence of the deceased from tho breakfast table yesterday morning caused Mr Stewart, manager of the dispensary, to proceed to his bedroom. The door was found to be fastened and Mr Stewart thereupon got in at tho window. Deceased was found in an unconscious stale' and Drs Fisher and Macintyrc were quickly in attendance, the former gentleman happening to he close at hand at tho time. Deceased never rallied, however, and expired about half past five o’clock. A bottle was found in the bedroom containing extract of opium, and the stomach pump used by Dr Maciutyro shewed that deceased had swallowed some of the stuff, but whether through misadventure or from other causes is not yet known. Deceased was a very old resident of Pleasant Point, where lie was well known.
An inquest was held at the Clarendon Hotel at 4 o’clock this afternoon, and therefore of course too late for notice in this issue.
