TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.
An adjourned ordinary meeting of the above took place at the Council Chambers last evening. Present —His Worship the Mayor and Crs Gibson, Shepherd, GuUmann, Jackson, Filmer, Gabites. ."Ross, and Sherratt.
His Worship the Mayor, in opening (he proceedings remraked that the Councillors were doubtless aware of the object of the meeting, which was to take into consideration the best method of dealing with the balance in hand of the Waterworks loan. He had gone very carefully over the matter with the Waterworks Engineer, Mr Dobson, and
they found that a sum of £11,662 17s lid would remain after the present scheme was provided for. Mr Dobson was present and would tell them what was the value of the. surplus plant in hand.
Mr Dobson, waterworks engineer, stated that surplus plant to the value of £076 remained.
His Worship further remarked that there were two ways of disposing of the balance money (amounting, with the surplus plant, to ,£12,938 17s lid), they could either extend the waterworks scheme, so as to include the suburbs, or they could deposit it in the Bank at interest. He had spoken to two Bank managers, and found that the highest rate of interest obtainable at the Banks would be four per cent. In reply to His Worship, Mr Dobson stated te cost of extenling the water works scheme, so as to make it embrace the suburbs, would be a little over ,£7OOO.
Cr Gibson moved the following resolution ; —“ That as several enquiries have been made in re water supply outside Borough boundary, this Council is of opinion that residents in the suburbs should be treated upon the same basis in re charges and terms for water as those resident within the Borough, and (ho Waterworks Committee are requested to report upon tire best scheme or system for supplying the suburbs, both as to any individual consumers end districts, and the nature of any guarantee to be taken before the pipes are laid down ; and they are authorised to take any advice, legal or engineering, they may deem necessary ; and the Finance Committee are authorised to re invest any anticipated balance from Waterworks loan under the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1876, and on the best terms obtainable, and at such dates as they may deem advisable.” Seconded by Cr Gabites, after the discussion, and carried.

His Worship stated that the Christchurch Insurance Companies, would reduce the price of insurance bj r 12.1 per cent, directly the water was laid on for lire preventive purposes, Two more resolutions wore also passed as follows : Moved by Cr Gibson, seconded by Cr Shepherd, and carried—“ That the engineer is authorised to take the necessary steps under conditions of contract to terminate Townsou’s contract No 25, waterworks, if he deems such a course advisable.”
Moved by Cr Gibson, seconded by Cr Cullmanu, and carried—“ That the engineer be authorised to spend, say £ls, in construction of water-race by day labor or private contract, as he may think advisable.” The Council then adjourned.
