His Worship the Mayor, in opening (he proceedings remraked that the Councillors were doubtless aware of the object of the meeting, which was to take into consideration the best method of dealing with the balance in hand of the Waterworks loan. He had gone very carefully over the matter with the Waterworks Engineer, Mr Dobson, and

they found that a sum of £11,662 17s lid would remain after the present scheme was provided for. Mr Dobson was present and would tell them what was the value of the. surplus plant in hand.

He had spoken to two Bank managers, and found that the highest rate of interest obtainable at the Banks would be four per cent. In reply to His Worship, Mr Dobson stated te cost of extenling the water works scheme, so as to make it embrace the suburbs, would be a little over ,£7OOO.

Cr Gibson moved the following resolution ; —“ That as several enquiries have been made in re water supply outside Borough boundary, this Council is of opinion that residents in the suburbs should be treated upon the same basis in re charges and terms for water as those resident within the Borough, and (ho Waterworks Committee are requested to report upon tire best scheme or system for supplying the suburbs, both as to any individual consumers end districts, and the nature of any guarantee to be taken before the pipes are laid down ; and they are authorised to take any advice, legal or engineering, they may deem necessary ; and the Finance Committee are authorised to re invest any anticipated balance from Waterworks loan under the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1876, and on the best terms obtainable, and at such dates as they may deem advisable.” Seconded by Cr Gabites, after the discussion, and carried.
