Republican Victory. Paris, Aug. 22. The full returns of elections for the Chamber of Deputies show that the contests throughout the country have lesulted in the defeat of the Bonapartist and Communist candidates, and in the success of the moderate Republicans. The Anglo-French TreatyLondon, Aug, 24. In the House of Commons last night, a question was put to the President of the Board of Trade with the view of ascertaining the intention of the Govern ment with regard to the Anglo-French Commercial Treaties. In reply, the Right Hon. J. Chamberlain stated that negotiations between French and British Governments were only suspended for a time, and he trusted that the proposals which France was shortly expected to make, would allow of their resumption at an early date. The Boers DiscontentedCapetown, August 22. Telegrams to hand from Pretoria, announce that considerable discontent is being manifested by the Boers, generally, with the Convention agreed to between the Triumvirate and the Royal Commission. Strong complaint is made that the settlement arrived at greatly favors the Transvaal Kaffirs, and is detrimental to the interest of the Boer people.
Spanish Elections. Madrid, Aug. 22. The elections to the Spanish Cortes, which have just concluded, have resulted in the return of candidates favorable to the policy of the present Ministry under Senor Sagasta. Ayoub Khan’s Movements. Calcutta. August 22. Intelligence is to hand from Candabar announcing that Ayoub Khan has issued a proclamation to the people declaring himself Ameer of Afghanistan. His advance against Abdul Rahman is reported to be still further delayed, owing to the want of money with which to provide necessary supplies. President Garfield in a Dying State. Washington, Aug. 22. The latest bulletin regarding President Garfield reports that his medical attendants have but faint hopes of his recovery from the relapse which recently set in.
