[Reuter's Agenoy.l Melbourne, Aug. 12. At a meeting of the Royal Society last night Mr Newbery read a paper on the subject of Dixon’s gas. The Speaker ridiculed the patentee’s specifications and was confirmed in his opinion by others who addressed the meeting. Finally’a motion was carried unanimously declaring that kerosene is the sole illuminating ingredient of Dixon’s gas. The steamer Ferret was put up to auction to-day, but was bought in at £1)000. Sydney, August 12. Mr E. A. Baker, Minister of Mines, has resigned his portfolio in consequence of a recent debate in the Legislative Assembly regarding the expenditure of the vote to- the Milburn Creek Copper Company. Mr Julian Salamons, Q.C., has been appointed sole Royal Commissioner to enquire into the charges which have been made in this affair. One of the smallpox patients named named Dogherty dieo at the Quarantine station this morning from the effects of the disease.
