THEATRE ROYAL.
Herr Bandmann and his clover company commenced a farewell engagement of f«ur nights at the Theatre Boyal last evening, and received a most flattering reception at the hands of the Timaru public who are always ready to support and encourage genuine talent. “ Richelieu ” had been announced for production last night, but by special request Borneo and Juliet ” was substituted. As the passionate, chivalrous and romantic Borneo, Herr Bandmann appeared to much advantage, and confirmed, by his well rendered pourtrayal of the character, the favorable impression he made when here before. Whether as the earnest eager lover, the mourner over the Juliet whom ho supposes dead, or in the more tragic passages Herr Bandraann’s acting was excellent. Of Miss Louise Beaudot's Juliet it would be indeed difficult to speak too highly. So much power, grace, humour and pathos are rarely possessed by so young an artiste. Miss Beaudet, who received several enthusiastic recalls, should have a great future before her. Mr J. F. Cathcart is also to bo congratulated, on his finished pourtrayal of Mercutio. His rendering of the famous passage commencing “ Oh then, I see Queen Mab has been with you,” was a most masterly piece of elocution and drew foilb a double round of applause. Mr Musgrave, always painstaking and conscientious, made an excellent Capulet, and in the scenes with, his love-sick daughter, Juliet, was particularly effective. Mrs Walter Hill enacted the Nurse, but although she was successful in presenting the peevishness and petulance of old age, she hardly looked the character, her make-up being too young. The remaining cast was satisfactorily filled.
For this evening “ Narcisse ” (written specially for Herr Bandmann, and said to be one of his most successful impersonations) is announced, and the perforraance will conclude with a laughable farce by Herr Bandinann himself, en. titled “ A Radical Cure.” Such a bill will doubtless have the effect of attracting another crowded house.
