An enquiry is to bo held into the late fire at the Cash Palace. This morning the following jury wore empanelled : —Messrs Moses White, Win. Priest, Wm. His'opi T. W. Fyfc, J. R. Stausell, Dan. Hagget, F. B. Greenup, C. B. Grierson, Charks Bourne, Geo. Bannister, Richard Kidwili, Jas. Anderson, and Jus. Ord. One juryman did not appear when called, and was lin°d £l* in default. The jury having proceeded to tluf scene of the lire, and inspected the premises, returned to the Court house,where each juiyman wa s bound over in hiso.vn recognisances of £25 to appear on Monday next at the inquest,
W r e have been informed that a new weekly journal, under the auspices of the Orange institution will shortly be established in Christchurch. It is to be owned by a Company, with a capital of £2OOO in shares' of £1 each. At the present time the organ of the institution is “The Protestant,” a monthly publication. The latter will be taken over by the new company, and the name will be continued. We understand that more than half of the shares have already been taken up. A surveyor named Thomas Anderson blew his brains out on Monday at Hawera, with a carbine. The deceased came to New Zealand seven years ago, and was one cf the surveyors turned orf the plains by the natives.
The Peninsular and Oriental Company’s steamship Kaiser-i-hihd with the Suez mails, which left London on July 1, arrived at Melbourne on Monday morning. An entertainment will be given by the members of the Presbyterian Sol-fa class at the Oldf. Hows’ Hall, Barnard street, on Thursday evening next. The programme comprises “ A short sketch of the life of Joseph,” and as a second part, a number of favorite song; and reciiations. There is every prospect of an enjoyable evening.
A rather smart transaction, even for precocious colonials, is thus recorded by the “ Bruce Herald ”Some of the ingenious youths of Milton, some time ago, removed a number of brass cocks and other fittings from the “ Bishop's engine ” which was in the Implement Company’s yard, having been purchased by them, and afterwards disposed of the plunder to the company for old brass. Mr Campbell, of Christchurch (brother of the late Dr Campbell, who perished in the Tararua), has offered (says the “ Mataura Ensign ”) to purchase the boat in which the Hist mate came ashore from the wreck, equip it, and hand it over to the miners at Waikawa, to be used as a lifeboat should the necessity arise. For some time a movement has been on foot to incorporate several of the villages north of and contiguous to Christchurch into a Borough, and the inhabitants now propose that Government should make the new electorate of St Albans coterminous with it. The schooner Bee, which left Lyttelton for Havelock three weeks ago, has not readied there yet, and fears are entertained re'a*.ding her safety. The Bee is a schooner of 31 tons register, owned by L. and Co., of Christchurch, and commanded by Captain John Green, who had three sons aboard as a crew. There were a’so two other man on board going up to the saw mills. More than 5,500,000 barrels of English beer are consumed annnaily in London alone. There arc twenty-five distinct Methodist denominations in the world with a total of 4,030,780 members. The death is announced at Epernay of M. Moet, head of the champagne firm. He leaves a fortune of £1,250,000. sterling. Mr W. Upton, Architect, invites tenders for removing a cottage, and building two shops. Mr F. J. Wilson, Architect, invites applications for additions to a dwelling house.
