THE CHAMPION SCULLER.
William Hearn, who has just won the sculling match with .Albert White, of Mercury Bay,for £IOO and the championship of New Zealand, is, says a local paper, a West Coast lad, having lived a long time at Hokitika. He rowed on the Grey River several times, and the last time he rowed he was defeated by Jackson, of Greyraouth, who hud rare skill with a pair of sculls. He was one of the most modest and unassuming of young men. When he rowed Messem ger he lost all the little savings he had, and when he being matched to tow. White he offered to mortgage his household furniture for the balance of the £IOO, which he was unable to find in ready cash. Hearn has worked Very hard all his life, but has always been abstemious and careful of himself, and having a first class constitution, the public have not heard the last of him in connection with rowing. He seems to be conscious of his power, and will not bo satisfied •until he is pitted against the best man in the colonies.
In the House of Representatives yesterday in reply to Mr Turnbull, Mr Dick said that Government had not yet considered the report sent in by the Inspector of Prisons, and were not yet prepared to say what would be done regarding he recommendations io abolish schools in different prisons* to weigh prisoners periodically in order to test whether they are losing or gaining flesh, to alter the present dietary scale so as to cheek any propensity on the part of prisoners to increase in weight, the appointment of a Medical Board to decide upon a dietary scale, and that gaolers be permitted to punish prisoners without the consent of Visiting Justices. A little boy, son of Mrs Percival, was <nocked down by a trolly on the Breakwater this afternoon, and was a good acal shaken and bruised. He was attended by Dr Macintyre.
