POLITICAL RUMORS.
The following appeared in this morning’s “ Press” from its Wellington correspondent: — Mr Weston, M.H.E., has arrived, and it is understood will not seek in any way to embarras the Government or to make capital out of his own personal grievances, voting on measures according to their merits. At the same time it is believed that he will take an early opportunity of criticising retrenchment as carried out by the present Ministry. Ministers were in Cabinet a long time to-day, considering the various Bills yet to be introduced. Nothing fresh has transpired as to the Representation Bill or the Local Government measures. It is now said that Sir G. Grey will not move in regard to his Local Government Bill, or allow its provisions to transpire, until he has seen the Government measure.
It is probable that Ministers will introduce a Bankruptcy Bill if time and circumstances permit ; if so, it will he merely framed on the new English Bill.
The present programme for this week is to finish the Licensing Bill, of which several postponed clauses still remain to be dealt with, and proceed with the Eegulation of Elections Bill. This and private business will probably fill up most of the week. Mr Reader Wood was closeted with Ministers to day, and rumor of course connects this with the Ministerial vacancy, but I have as yet no information on the subject.
