BRUTAL ASSUALT.

A brutal assault was perpetrated at Geelong on the 4th June, on the person of a well known inoffensive Chinaman, named Chung Wye, who resides in a wooden shanty, cultivates a garden abutting on Malop-street, and earns a living by vending the vegetables be grows and by hawking fish which he procures from the fishermen. It appears, says the “ Geelong Advei tiser,” “ he was quietly wending his way homo on the night mentioned, and had reached the Builder’s Anns Hotel, at which corner a number of young men habitually resort at all hours of the day and night, when he received a rude push from one of them. The Celestial inquired the reason why he was thus molested, and in reply received a voilent blow on the side of his face, which broke his jaw-bone and knocked him down on the street. He was then kicked and knocked about in a very disgraceful manner while he. lay on the ground, and among other injuries had his ribs knocked in and broken. The assault was witnessed by another Chinaman, who attempted to help his friend, and, failing, ran for the police, but before the arrival of the constables the larrikins had decamped. The injured man was then assisted home to his hovel which he shares with a fellow countryman named Hay Kit. Dr Reid was informed of the affair and generously took the treatment of the case in hand. Warrants were issued for the arrest of the assailants.
