RAILWAY RETURNS.
Two returns, moved for respectively by Mr Wright and Mr Montgomery last session, have now been printed, and are noted as having cost respectively £llO and £220 to compile. They relate mainly to the position of the railways and branches fifteen months ago. The following figures, however, are new : Branch railways in the South Island cost altogether £1,485,693, and the aggregate receipts for year just expired are £170,277, the expenditure being £114,650. But if Lyttelton and Port Chalmers branches be deducted, the remaining branch lines cost £977,165 to construct, and have only £73,204 of gross receipts, with £53,930 of expenditure —thus leaving only £14,274 towards paying the interest on £978,165, which at the present rate, would amount to £50,000. The Port Chalmers and Lyttelton lines yield a net revenue of £47,353 to pay interest on £507,529. The cost of construction, on the other hand of the Lawrence branch was £182,915 and it has a loss of £374 on the bare working expenses.
