THE LICENSING QUESTION

Auckland, June 9,

Great interest was taken in opposing a license to an hotel in the Mount Eden district, which had been twice pre viously applied for and refused. Air Tyler, for the applicants, placed the matter on the ground of sympathy for Mrs Hedley and five children. Mr J. B. Bussell announced he had been authorised by the objectors to challenge the publican interests to deposit the sum of £SO for Airs Hedley and he would cover it with a similar amount. There was no response to-this offer, and the opposition subscribed. £ls for the widow and children on the spot. This was done to show they had merely contended against general principles in opening an hotel in the district, and were not animated by any personal feelings against Airs Hedley. About twenty-five objectors were present. Mr Peace called, deposed he was foreman for Hull Bros.; and intimidations had been used to prevent him from objecting to the house. Lionel Phillips camo to him and threatened, unless ho ceased his opposition he would withdraw' Ehrenfried’s goods from Hull’s store. He repeated this threat again to Hull and carried it into effect “ because he (Peace) yeas not dismissed.” Hull said he would, not interfere with the rights of his employee as a private citizen. The Licensing Bench unanimously' refused the license. 1
