MAGISTERIAL.

TIMAEU—THIS DAY. (Before R. Beetham Esq,, R.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Jane Smith, a young married woman, was charged with being drunk. The defendant admitted the offence, but pleaded hard to be let off as she had a child that needed all her care. His Worship reminded the defendant that this was by no means the first time she had been before him for drunkenness, and asked the husband whether he could do nothing to restrain his wife from giving way to intemperate habits. The husband made no reply, and His Worship said he would give defendant another chance. She would be fined 10s and pay 2s for the hire of the express in which she had been conveyed to the station, but if she came before him again she would not be so leniently dealt with. THE WINCHESTER JACK SHEPPARD. James McManus was charged with escaping from legal custody by breaking away from the Geraldine lock-up. On the application of Inspector Pender accused was remanded to Geraldine. CIVIL CASES. Eeid v. E, Hope—claim £7. Mr Eeid for plaintiff; Mr Hamersley for the defendant. This was a cross action, and resulted in a verdict for the plaintiff for £4 9s with costs.
