THE KELLY AWARD.
The “ Brisbane Courier” states that the following telegram has been sent by Mr A. H- Palmer, the Colonial Secre tary of Queensland, to the Chief Secretary, Melbourne, concerning the awards made by the Board appointed to apportion the £BOOO offered for the apprehension of the Kelly gang.— I protest against the award made in the Kelly case to our Queensland troopers. I had vour assurance that in any distribution of the award their claims should have fair consideration, and I regret to say they have not. According to authorised versions of Ned Kelly’s remarks, the very presence of the trackers kept the outlaws within hounds for months, and consequently saved the country from their depredations. They took, with their officer, whoso, just claims have also been slighted, a very active part in the final contest, one of them being actually wounded, and they are tha worst treated of the whole crowd.” Not very elegant—the last expression—for a Colonial Secretary.
