THE TOTALISATOR.

The following telegram, dated Adelaide, May 9, appears in a Melbourne paper : —Great excitement was caused at the races on Saturday owing to a mistake made in working the totalisator. "When the Goodwood Handicap was over, the machine showed that of £904 invested no one had backed the winner. Directly afterwards, however, a winning ticket was presented duly embossed, and Mr Barnard endeavored to explain to the crowd that the mistake arose in consequence of the number being shown in the wrong compartment. 'lhe crowd refused to hear him at first, but eventually tliey were partially satisfied. Mr Barnard has since resigned the secretaryship of the club. A later telegram states ; —with regard to the mistake with the totalisator at the racecourse on Saturday, the winner of £836 on D.O.D. in the Goodwood Handicap has made a declaration before a notary public that he invested £1 shortly after the window had been opened, receiving the ticket produced. Ho also contradicted the rumours that had been circulated, and affirmed that ho had had no bulfness transactions with either Mr Barnard or Mr Bagot, and was not indebted to them. An explanation has been made as to how the mistake occurred, and everything now appears cleared up in a satisfactory manner.
