GREY VALLEY ELECTION.
A correspondent of the “Lyttelton Times,” telegraphs : —Before leaving Wanganui to contest the election for the Grey Valley district, Mr Fitzgerald showed a telegram from the Premier promising every assistance. It is understood here that this is in consideration of Mr Fitzgerald supporting any modification in the Education Act in the direction of giving State aid to schools, denominational or otherwise, that will submit to Government inspection. It is said that on this understanding Mr Guiness will not oppose Mr Fitzgerald, both holding the same opinions on what is to be the test question of the election, and possibly of the existence of the Ministry. The reason for Wanganui taking interest in the Grey Valley election is the great exodus which has taken place during the past two years from the West Coast of the South Island to this place. Mr Fitzgerald was formerly a magistrate at Hokitika, and for the past year or two has been editor of the Wanganui Chronicle.” Practically, he will bo nominated by the Premier, and supported by Wanganui influence. At the same time it is admitted on all hands that he is must to be preferred to Mr Woolcock.
