THEATRE ROYAL.

“ The Doctor of Alcantara,” a comic opera in two acts, formed the principal attraction at the Theatre Royal last evening. The opera contains some pretty music, and one or two effective situations, but as a whole it possesses hardly so much “go” as the other pieces in the company’s repertoire. Miss Lydia Howarde both sang and acted with considerable effect, and indeed the same may be said of Miss Jennie Nye and Mddle de Glorian, Messrs Power and Hydes were both exceedingly funny of course. Mr J. H. Marshall was in better voice than on any previous evening. Mr W. Hayes is the possessor of a capital tenor voice and sung with much expression. The performance concluded with the amusing little comedy of “The Jealous Husband,” which, by the way, is ( also known as “ Pettibone’s troubles ” and « A Kiss in the Dark.” Miss Jennie Nye made a charming Mrs Pettibone, Mr D’Almaine a good Frank Fathom, and Miss Clara

Vincent played tbe small part of tinmaid servant with effect. Mr xarry Power was of course very funny a*Pettibone, the jealous husband, but why did not Mr J. P. Hydes appear in this character ? This is an impersonation that Mr Hydes has made peculiarly his own, and we must say we missed him in the part. To-night, the last of the Company’s appearance here, will be repeated, by special request, the great extravaganza of “ Robinson Crusoe,” and those who have not seen it, had better do so, for it is the best production of the troupe ; and those who have seen it cannot go far wrong if they go to see it over again.
