[Ebutbe’s Agency.] Sailing under False Colors. Melbourne. April 29. The captain and owner of the steamer, India, alias Ferret, which has been seized by the Customs for sailing under a false register, is missing, and the crew have abandoned the vessel. They assert that they were threatened and forced to silence by the captain. They were engaged at Cardiff for three years, and were to go to Brazil for a cargo of coffee, which was sold at the Cape for £15,000. The name of the vessel was twice changed. From the Cape she proceeded to Mauritius, and from there to this port, where the captain endea- | vored to sell the vessel. It is proved that her papers have been forged. Later. The owner of the steamer India has been arrested. Anti-Chinese Meeting. Sydney April 29. At a crowded and influential meeting held last night to discuss the present influx of Chinese, it was resolved to send a deputation to Government to urge the necessity for repressive measures against Chinese immigration. Benk of New South WalesThe ordinary half-yearly meeting of the shareholders of the Bank of New South Wales was held here to-day to receive the report of the Directors for the half-year ended 31st March. The balance sheet showed that the profits for the half-year amounted to £93,003, to which was to be added the balance carried forward from the previous half-
sum for division of £95,523. The following appropriations were recommended :—To the payment of • a dividend at the rate of 15 per cent per annum, £75,000; to a bonus at the rate •of 2|- per cent per annum, £12,500 ; to be carried to the reserve fund, £SOOO leaving a balance to be carried forward of £3089. The report was unani mously adopted by the meeting.
