The Babes in the Wood. Napier, April 19
Two little boys between the ages of four and five years, children of Scandanavian settlers in the Twenty Mile Bush, wandered into the forest and were lost for four days and three nights, although search parties went out in all directions. News has just reached town that the children have been found terribly exhausted from thirst, hanger, and exposure. Death on the RacecourseChristchurch, April 19. At the C. J.C. races yesterday, William Deakin, an elderly man, attempted to cross the running course, as the horses in the Hack race were coming in. He was knocked down and died a few moments afterwards. Sale of Stud Stock. Redwood’s racing stock and young stock from the Bundoora Stud, Victoria were offered for sale by auction this morning. There was hut a small attendance, and all were passed in either because of no bid, or because the bids did not reach the reserve prices. Extensive Fires* Invercargill, April 19. A stable owned by R. Spence of Heddon Bush has been burned down. It was insured for £2OO in the Standard. By a fire at Winton on Sunday the Odd Fellows’ Hall, White’s (pastrycook) house and store, the Municipal Hall and Bailey’s chemist’s shop were, destroyed. The corporation books and some other property were saved. The Insurances on White’s stock and effects were £IOO in the Norwich Union, and on the house, £2OO in the same office ; Odd Fellow’s Hall £SOO in the same office ; Bailey’s drugs £2OO in the New Zealand.
