The Chief Lunatic Arrested. Wellington. April 1G Wbitelaw, late Superintendent of the Lunatic Asylum, has just been arrested on an information laid under the Lunacy Act, for cruelty to the patient Mclntosh, as stated in the Commissioners’ report. Dwelling Destroyed. Dunedin. April IG. A five-roomed house at Mornington, owned by C. R. Bowman and occupied bv a Mr Jones, was burned down this morning. It was insured in the National, but to what amount is not known. Later. Insurances —£200 on the furniture in the North British, and £IOO in the National. The fire was caused by the explosion of a lamp. It broke out at 11 last night, and was got under as the people thought. Contractors at War. Proudfoot has issued a writ for £20,000 against Mackay his late partner for alleged defamation of character. Sudden Deaths. William Insley, wood-cutter, died suddenly atPurakanui on Thursday. James Green, a giooin of intemperate habits, died in the City Hotel stables. He bad gone there in a drunken condition, and had laid down. Retrenching. The City Council has effected retrenchment to« the extent of £3OOO annually.
