MR LUND’S CONCERT.
A concert under the direction of Mr H. M. Lund, member of the Royal Academy of Music, Stuttgart, was given in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Barnard street, last evening and attracted a small but select audience. It is neither flattering nor encouraging for gentlemen with such talent as Mr Lund displayed to count an audience of some fifty or sixty people, however demonstrative in their appreciation. The concert was commenced with Be.ethoven’s “ Moonlight Sonata ” (Mr Lund), the pianist rendering this exquisite composition with an impressiveness and delicacy of touch that fully sustained his reputation. Amongst others, the “ Cradlesong ” and “Two Vaises” (Chopin), “ Spinning Night ” (Liszt), and “ Pasquinade” (Gottchalk), were given by the same performer, who was frequently applauded. The rendering of the latter was especially noticeable for the brilliant execution and verve which Mr Lund infused into a rather difficult composition. The programme was ably sustained vocally by Miss Haigh and Mr Wright, but we have heard the former in much better voice, her higher notes on this occasion having a tendency to finish in B flat. Messrs Galoot, Rowles, Ziesler, and Haigh gave “ When Evening Twilight Gathers Round,” “ Beware, take Care.” and “ Stars of the Summer Night” (three glees) in a very effective manner, the alto of Mr Rowles being especially noticeable for its clearness, and the fine bass voice of Mr Ziesler mingling with the melody like the grand full tones of an organ. At the conclusion hearty and continued applause was deservedly given to Mr Lund, and the musical treat terminated.
It is to be regretted that high-class concerts of this character cannot “ draw” from an assumedly musical community a larger attendance than that which graced the Oddfellows’ Hall last evening, and that the encouragement given to one of the finest pianists we have heard in New Zealand should be so far from satisfactory.
