THE CENSUS.

SECOND EDITION

The census will be taken all over the British empire to-morrow. Schedules have been distributed all over Timaru and the rest of the colony during the week. The headings of the column contain plain directions as to the way in which they should be filled. It has to be filled up by the occupier or person in charge of the dwelling, otherwise they will be liable to a penalty. The followis the official caution :

“ Any person who shall refuse or willfully neglect to fill up, to the best of his or her knowledge, information, or belief, this schedule, or to sign and deliver the same, or shall refuse or willfully neglect to answer, or shall untruly answer any; inquiry made by a sub-enumerator, or shall wilfully make, sign, or deliver, or cause to be made signed, or delivered, any false return or statement, of any particular in this schedule, or shall obstruct any person in the performance of any duty under the “ Census Act, 1881,” is liable under the provisions of the said Act, to a penalty not exceeding £2O. Any officer, enumerator, sub-enumerator,-or clerk who shall divulge any of the contents of this schedule is liable,under the provisions of the said Act, to a penalty not exceeding £20.”

In the schedule must be entered a list of the members of the household or family,visitors, servants, and others who sleep in the house on the night of the 3rd pros., and the particulars required are explained by the headings of the 11 columns which have to be filled up*
