TIMAEU—THIS DAY. (Before 11. Beetham Esq., E.M.) SUPPLYING BEEXt ON SUNDAY". A. O. G. Stone, of the Commercial Hotel, was charged with a breach of the Licensing Act in suppling a person other than a bomi fulo traveller or boarder, with a glass of beer on Sunday last. The defendant said he would plead guilty, but at the same time the beer had been supplied against his orders. His Worship said that if the defendant wished to defend his case he had better plead not guilty. The defendant then said he would plead not guilty. The case was adjourned until March 30. BOROUGH COUNCIL V. BRUCE. This case, in which the defendant is charged with infringements of the Building Regulations, was to-day adjourned on the application of Mr Reid, who appeared for Mr Bruce, for one month. ALLEGED LARCENY FROM A BOARDINGHOUSE. William Gardner, was charged with the 'larceny of goods valued at £4, from Hamilton’s Boarding house in May, 1877. Mrs Hamilton deposed that her husband and herself kept a boardinghouse in this town. The accused was acting for them in May 1877 as cook. He was discharged from their employment in that month, and after he left witness missed a light-blue dress piece, a concertina, night-dress, chemise, piece of flannel, artificial flowers, and a satin belt. Some of the missing articles were subsequently found in accused's bag which he had left in Shepherd’s store. Witness was laid up in bed at the time of the robbery. The accussed had no claim whatever on the missing property. The accused when asked if he had any questions to put to the witness persisted in saying that he was innocent of the charge. On being pressed by Mr Beetham to cross-examine the witness if he hud anything which he wished to cross-examine on, he at length asked her whether he had returned to her house i after he left in May, and the witness re. plied that ho had been back at the
boarding house once after he left and had stopped for a day or two. At this stage Inspector Pender asked for aiemand in order to procure further evidence. The accused was accordingly remanded until March 23. The,Court then adjourned.
