CHEAP WATCHES. Grave doubts have arisen concerning the genuineness of the Rodanow Manufacturing Company of Boston, whose wares in the shape of watches at fabulously low prices have been advertised simultaneously in the columns of this journal and in nearly every leading newspaper in New Zealand and the Australian colonies. The “ Otago Daily Times,” which has suffered in common with others throws a strong light of suspicion over the tempting bait. Our contemporary has been shown by pne of the leading "firms in Dunedin a letter received by them from a correspondent in Boston, from which we make the following extract; —“The Rodanow Manufacturing Company, which has been advertising so extensively in the Colonial papers, is a fraud it is claimed, and the manager is lodging in the city gaol awaiting his trial.” The “Times ” has also received from a correspondent at Wellington the following letter bearing on the subject:— • RODANOW MANUFACTURING COMPANY. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I have seen a very long advertisement in several contemporaries, announcing that the Rodanow Manufacturing Company of Boston, U.S.. will send magnificent watches anywhere for a nominal sum. If any parties in Dunedin have sect for these watches, they will do well to oblige me with their names, as I hope shortly to be in receipt of Boston advices, and to be able to give them some interesting particulars about the matter. If I signed my real nahie to .this the fat- would be in the fire directly, so I will simply subscribe myself, yours, &0.-, ' • Jeremy Diddlee. Address, Box 16A, Wellington. The “Daily Times” goes on to describe the Rodono.w Company as a “bogus Company ” and expresses the hope that “ the New Zealand victims are not numerous.” Until however, we have more definite, evidence than our southern contemporary has supplied we shall be sorry to, stigmatise the “ Hodanow ” as a swindle. The extract from the letter of a leading firm, and the anonymous communication from Wellington, are so obscure and indirect in their way that unless supported by genuine names we are inclined to deem them both cowardly
