THE LATE TIMARU FIRE BRIGADE.
The ex-members of the above Brigade met last evening in the commercial room of the Clarendon Hotel at the summons of their late captain to further consider their position with the Borough Council. There were 17 present, and Mr T. Murray was voted to the chair.
The Chairman explained that he had called the meeting owing to the Bankot New Zealand having refused to cash the cheques presented to them that day, and which had been duly drawn and signed according to a resolution prior to the termination of their last meeting. A small cheque to Mr Kelly had after much hesitation been paid, but the cheque to enable them to pay the balance into an account in the name of the trustees appointed had been returned marked “ draweis right is disputed.” Mr Chisholm had stated that tiiis was done at the instance of the Mayor. The Treasurer (Mr K. Waters), who presented the cheque, corroborated the captain’s statement, and said that he had at once placed the matter in the hands of a solicitor.
The meeting then generally endorsed the Treasurer’s action.
Mr Kelly then stated that he had taken an express up to the engine .station for the purpose of conveying the library to the hospital, but Mr Euscoe refused delivery stating that ho had orders from the mayor to that effect. After interviewing the Town Clerk, he also placed this matter in the solicitor’s hands, and a legal demand for the books had been at once made.
The action taken by the late Captain, Treasurer, and Mr Kelly was approved of, and a subscription started for the purpose of defraying the law expenses at present incurred, which was liberally responded to by all present. The following were then appointed a Committee to secure delivery of all the property of the late Brigade (notably the library and the small torches), viz., Messrs Murray, Waters, Kelly, and Snodgrass. Mr Snodgrass drew attention to the fact that tiie honorary members hadj as yet, had no say in the matter, and the acting Secretary was instructed to write them asking their attendance at a meeting to be held on Friday night next. It was proposed by Mr Barry, and seconded by Mr Davies, and carried unanimously— 1 ‘ That the Associated Fire
Brigades Society be informed that this Brigade has disbanded, and copies of all the papers containing the particulars leading to, and recording same be sentto them so that they may thoroughly understand the cause of the present action of this Brigade.” It was then decided by: general consent that the members ' should meet again on Friday next March 8, at the Clarendon Hotel at 8 p.m. when the committee would report further progress. The meeting then adjourned.
