MR HURSTHOUSE ON THE STUMP.
[By Telegraph.]
Motukka, Feb 15. Mr Hursthouse addressed the electors here last night. He said he looked upon the idea of repudiation with utter scorn, and commenting on the way that the loans had been expended, he contended that all must contribute alike to meet the liabilities, although they had not all received an equal benefit from the expenditure. Ho was against borrowing in future in the same way as in the past. He spoke strongly against the way in which Ministers were chosen. They should be selected on account of their ability and not polity. He condemned strongly the large expenditure in Tara naki. He regretted the resignation of Mr Bryce, which he attributed to that gentleman being unable to carry his views in the Ministry, viz., that Hiroki should be arrested. He was opposed to the payment of memb' rs of the Upper House, and said it might be advantageous to abolish payment of members altogether, leaving electorates desirous of returning poor men to provide their expenses themselves. He received a unanimous vote of confidence.
