TIMARU HOSPITAL.
At a meeting of the Hospital Commissioners yesterday,the annual balance sheet was submitted. The items were—building extension, £3llß 4s Id ; furniture, £146 ; working expenses, £2545 3s lOd; instruments, £ll6 9s Od; gasfittings and odds and ends, £337. Receipts —Subscriptions &c., £3l 10s Od ; Borough Council donation, £BO ; received from patients, £175 9s Od ; Government subsidy £2711 12s lOd. A number of accounts were passed, with the exception of £3 7s 6d for covering chairs which being unauthorised and disputed, Dr Chilton agreed to pay rather than have any unpleasantness. It was stated that the amateur theatrical benefit had proved a failure. A donation of £5 from Mr T. O’Driscoll was received with thanks. A letter from the Benevolent Aid Society requesting the Commissioners to keep in view in any future arrangements with the Resident Surgeon, the advisability of making provision for prescriptions being dispensed gratuitously at the Hospital, as the various medical men in the town had all along acted gratuitously, occasioned some discussion. Dr Chilton objected to the proposal as did Mr Hall andhlr LeCren on the ground that the Society and the Hospital were distinct institutions, and no resolutions were arrived at. In reply to Mr Sutter, who said there were grievious complaints by outdoor patients about the difficulty they had in finding the Resident Surgeon at home, Dr Chilton insisted on his right to an afternoon constitutional and. an evening stroll, but said he always left word where he could befound if wanted Attention was called to the defective ventilation of the Hall and LeCren wards and closets, and the Chairman and Surgeon were authorised to deal with the evil. Three weeks leave of absence was granted to the matron,
Dr Chilton mentioned that there were five cases of typhoid fever and one of ol scarletina in the institution. The meeting then adjourned,
