TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Ah adjourned ordinary meeting of the above took place last evening at the Council Chambers.

Present—His Worship the Mayor, presiding, and Councillors Shepherd, Ross, Sherratt, Gibson, and Cullman. COKIIESPONDENCE. From the Secretary to the PostmasterGeneral, Wellington, offering to erect a good clock, striking the hours at the new Post office, if this Council would contribute £IOO towards the cost o£ the same.

His Worship the Mayor said this was a very important matter. The erection of a good town clock would be a boon to many work people and to the residents generally. The clock would cost £4OO, £IOO of which the Council was asked to contribute, and for bis part he would recommend that the offer be accepted.

After a short discussion Cr. Ross moved, Cr, Sherratt seconded, and it was carried—“ That the Council agree to contribute the sum of £IOO towards the cost of erecting a good clock striking the hours for the tower of the public buildings.” From Messrs Laidlaw, Glasgow, with reference to street lamps. From Mr J. S. Thompson, Waterworks surveyor, applying for a second progress payment on his contract. . It was resolved that the payment he made.

From the Secretary of the Timaru Gas Company, intimating that the Company could not see their way to carry out the suggested gas extension and were also unable to make any

reduction in the price o£ gas to the Corporation. From Messrs Perry and Perry with reference to the Council’s purchase of certain land formerly the property of the late Mr Landsborough. Or Shepherd moved, . Cr : Cullman seconded, and it was carried—“ That in answer to Messrs Perry and Perry’s letter stating it will be necessary to sign the document required in the purchase of land, that His Worship the Mayor and Crs Gibson and (Shepherd be appointed to act on behalf of the Council, and to affix the seal of the Corporation.”

From Mr T. Machin, architect, applying for leave to build certain additions to a stable in Brown street.

No fee accompanying the letter, it was resolved that it could not be entertained.

In reply to a question Mr Lough stated that there were 154 dogs registered within the Borough up to date.

His Worship remarked that he was quite sure there were fully 500 dogs within the Borough. It was moved by Cr Shepherd seconded by Cr Gabites and carried —“That the Registrar,-under “An Act to compel the Registration of Dogs, 1880,” at once lay informations against all owners of unregistered dogs, and that Mr Inspector Pender be respectfully asked to assist in enforcing the clauses of the Act.” KIN AN CIO COMMITTEE. Cr. Gabites was elected a member of the above Committee. THE KIKE BRIGADE. The Captain of the Fire Brigade submitted a list which he had prepared by order of the Council of the names and add resses of the Brigade. His Worship the Mayor remarked that the Council had determined that all members of the Brigade must reside within the Borough and the sound of the fire-bell. He then read over the list of names with the Captain of the Brigade, striking out, those of three members residing outside the borough. In reply to the Captain, his Worship said that the Council thought it would be best to supply new boots to the Brigade at the same time as the new uniforms, which would be ready in six weeks or two months’time. RUSSELL SQUARE. Resolved—“ That the action of the Works Committee in accepting amended tenders for the drainage of Russell square be confirmed.” WATERWORKS COMMITTEES’ REPORT. The above report was read. It was moved by Cr Ross, seconded by Cr Sherratt, and carried—“ That the report of the Waterworks Committee be received and adopted with the exception of the recommendation re contractors supplying all fencing material, as the Council are of opinion that the same should be tendered for, and supplied by the Council, and that the engineer be requested to furnish specifications of all standards, wire material, staples, &0., required, and that the Works Committee be authorised to advertise for tenders therefor, such tenders to be in by Feb. 28. BUILDING APPLICATIONS. With reference to certain applications for modifications of the building regulations it was resolved—“ That the Council cannot consistently consent to those requests, inasmuch as similar applications have been freqeuntly hitherto refused, and moreover the building surveyor has not certified for alterations as required by the regulations.” The Council then adjourned.
