A Eight Sentence.
Dunedin, Jan. 22. At the City Court Thomas [Richardson for embezzling monies belonging to Martin and Watson, his employers was sentenced to 28 days hard labor, the sentence being light, in consideration of the good character given him by the prosecutors. Educational Propositions. _At All Saints’ parish meeting last night the Rev. Mr Fitchett stated that two members of the Government had informed him they were favorable to an alteration of the Education Act so as to give ministers an opportunity of giving religious instructions to the public schools during school hours at least twice a week. The agent of Cole’s circus, before leaving for Melbourne, was made to pay over £lO for a paddock used here, of which bo took possession without leave. The amount was given to the hospitals, J. T. Thompson late Sur-veyor-General was the owner of the land.
