On resuming at the Dunedin Oval yesterday Jarvis played a steady, patient innings. MeDonnel, who joined his captain, had but a short -life, putting his second ball into Haskell’s hands, also in the slips. 50—3—01 Play continued very tame, Murdoch especially being unable to get hpid of leg balls. * Crawshaw secured a’ well-judged catch, and Slight had to retire with the dreaded dtlck’s-egg. 57—4— : 0. Alexander was the incomer, and ori McNeil’s next overlie was given out IJbw, also without troubling the scorers. 57—5—0. McNeil now had taken four wickets-for, twelve runs, arid two no balls—a splendid analysis 1 . Boyle was the next man, and when. 70 appeared on the telegraph Moore went on at his old end. Murdoch’s turn had now come, as he put one up behind the wickets, where the wicketkeeper secured it. 75—6—25. Boyle, who had 1 totted up his runs pretty rapidly, was now clean bowled by Moore, lie having 1 beeii'disposed, 6f at Invercargill in the same way. 81—7—18. Palmer came next, and made the first four hit of the clay—a leg hit off McNeil—and the play also became more livelyBlackham joined Groube, and cut Moore for a couple, bringing the century up amidst applause. Carr now went on. again, and with his second ball levelled. Blackham’s stumps. 104—9—2, Winter was last man. For twenty minutes the play was very tame, and it became a question whether the batsmen wonlc’l he able to keep up their stumps till time was called. White played one sharp back to 'Carr, but the howler declined to receive it. At a quarter befcxre six Vernon distinguished himself by catching White in the long field; 112—HO—3. Groube, for the second'time in New Zealand, carried his bat. The fielding of the Otago men was much above the average, and with a few exceptions no fault could be found with this department of the game. Moore bowled one wide, and McNeil three no-balls. ' At three minutes to six, ;p«vW and S. Leith appeared at the wickets to represent Otago. Blackham kept wickets with Alexander at point. Spofforth bowled at the north end,, delivering a maiden. Palmer, from the; opposite end, followed suit. The stumps; were then drawn for the day.
