The local paper alleges that thirty-two sly grog-shops exist in Oaoiaru, and calls on the police to pay periodical visits to some of them. A pedestrian tournament was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall Christchurch last evening. The first part of the programme was a running match for a silver cup. In fhisthe following well-known peds took part;—Webber, Whiting, Pentecost, and Fagan, the latter an Auckland man, who carried off r several trophies at recent popular meetings in Christchurch. The positions occupied by the men at starting were—Webber, Whiting, Pentecost, Fagan, and they proceeded thus for the first mile, after which the order was slightly changed by Fagan overlapping Pentecost. •At the fourth mile Fagan passed Webber. In the sixth mile Pentecost gave out, having gone five miles and twenty laps. He struck his arm violently against a sharp corner of the wall, and being in great pain could not proceed. Some very pretty manoeuvring between the two first men then took place. Webber passed Fagan twice, but the latter, on each occasion immediately regained his position of leader, Webber fell out after doing 7 miles and 8 laps. When time was called at the conclusion of the hour, Fagan had done 8 miles 13 laps, and Whiting 8 miles 5 laps. Shortly before ten o’clock, Mr Edwards entered the body of the hall to commence his great feat of walking 180 miles in forty-eight hours. He completed the first mile in nine minutes and a half. It is a “ go-as-you-please ” walk and finishes at ten on Saturday night. Mr J. L. Morris, general storekeeper, Pleasant Point, has been appointed agent for the sale of this journal.
