Important Marine Case.

Wellington, Jan. 19,

At the Supreme Court last night, the case o£ Holmwood v. the Marine Insurance Company was concluded at midnight. The jury returned a verdict for the defendant. A Changre of Cages. Cukistghubch. Jan. 19. The Maori prisoners numbering 149, were removed from Hipa Island to Lyttelton gaol this morning. They were very noisy during the march through town.

Weather and Crops.

Heavy rain fell last night. The weather is fine this morning, but a heavy thunderstorm has just commenced. Many of the crops have been cut and are not yet stacked.

Farmer’s Co-operative Movement. Oamahu, Jan. 19. Bateman’s lectures on Farmers’ Co-operation have been concluded. The movement is a success. _ A society is to be formed, and a provisional directorate will be appointed on Friday.

J. U. Davies seconded “ That this meeting impressed by the advantages offered by our f resent sj’stein of national education deprecates any interference with its provisions which would tend in the direction of denominationalism.” The Rev. Copeland moved, as a further amendment, “Thatthis meeting, while deprecating any legislation that tends to denominationalism, is yet of opinion that a portion of the Bible should be read (laity with a time-table and conscience clause.” After considerable confusion Bell’s amendment was carried by nearly three to one,: The Bible Association is going to convene another meeting. Another Bonfire. Invercargill, Jan. 19. The Fairflax Hotel near Otantau occupied by Thomas Price, was burned down last night. The loss is estimated at £IBOO. Only a few things were saved. The insurances amount to £SOO. It is believed the lire was caused by a defective chimnej r .
