History Repeats Itself. London, Jan, 13.
The trial of the Land Leaguers at Dublin continues. Macdonogh has opened the case for the defence of the
accused.-. In the course of his address he made a statement that he regarded the accusations which had been brought against the Leaguers as being in reality a- landlords' indictment against the tenants.
A. Split in the Deaguers’ Camp. Jan. 14.
In the House of Commons to day Mr Parnell’s amendment on the Address in Kopiy to the Queen’s Speech was put to a division, and was rejected by a large majority. The debate on the Address was resumed, but now stands further adjourned. Shaw and fifteen other Irish members of the House of Commons have seceded from Parnell’s leadership. Miners on Strike. An extensive strike of coalminers has commenced in Lancashire. 40,000 men are put of work. Jan. 15. The strike of miners in Lancashire is proving of a very grave character. Serious riots have occurred between strikers and the police in different places. A Dynamite Plot. Further rumors of intended Fenian raids are gaining cnrrencj'. It is now alleged that an attempt has been made to destroy the armory at Salford, in Lancashire, by the use of dynamite, but that the plot was: discovered in time to prevent its success. ■ South African Diversions. The detached squadron ordered to the Cape will, on arrival at Natal, land the Naval Brigade for service against the Boers. Cape Town, Jan. 15. News received to day from the seat of hostilities in Basutoland shows that notwithstanding recent heavy losses the enemy continue to act on the offensive. The rebels recently made strong attacks on the position of the colonial troops at Maseru and Leride, but were repulsed with further loss. The South American War.
Information has been received from South America that the Chilians are following up their success over the Peruvians and have occupied Hurien.
