TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.

The annual meeting of this Board was held to-day. Present ; —Messrs F. Archer, (Chairman) T. W. Hall, MrStudholine, W. C. Beswick, R. Turnbull E. Acton, W. Moody, Evans, Sutter and Gray. ANNUAL ACCOUNTS, The Chairman stated that the accounts were not yet audited and therefore could not be presented. They would have to stand over till next meeting. NEW SUKF BOAT. A letter was read from Mr Postlethwaite, expressing regret that owing to a fall from his horse on Friday last he could not attend the meeting, and stating that if he had been present he intended to move an amendment on Mr Beswick’s motion to the effect that no tender for a surf boat be accepted as the boats now in the possession of the Landing Service are sufficient for all purposes and the Board is not justified in incurring an additional expenditure of £4OO. Mr Beswick’s notice of motion was read .—■ Mr Beswick stated that if the feeling was adverse he would not press his motion.

Mr Moody said his reason for advocating an additional surf boat was that in case of accident or emergency of any kind, the service should be provided with a reserve boat.

Mr Hall said they could get assistance from the other services if necessary. He objected to running into avoidable expense, and he was particularly opposed to drawing from the general fund for the landing service.

TK$ Chaftman, in reply to a question, stated that three tenders had been received. The proposition to procure a surf boat had arisen from a recommendation by the manager of the service.

In reply to Mr Turnbull, the Engineer stated that there was sufficient depth at present for small vessels drawing 7ft. of water to come alongside the wharf, but he considered that until the northern arm of the Breakwater was made it would be dangerous for sailing vessels to lie alongside. Mr Turnbull—ln that case the wharf stands for nothing. The Engineer replied that the wharf was intended for steamers, which in case of an easterly sea could readily change their moorings. The new wharf had cost £2581 11s, and he anticipated that the cost of extending it would be £lO to £ll per foot. The next 50 feet would give a depth of 16 feet Gin. When the wharf was extended 300 feet the Ttiiaroa would be able to get alongside. Mr Acton suggested that a boat should be promptly built or an old one secured, Mr Evans was also of opinion that another boat should be obtained. After some discussion it was resolved on the motion of Mr Moody, “ That a new surf-boat be obtained,” five voting for the motion and three against. Mr Hall said a good serviceable boat could be obtained from the N.Z.L. and M. Agency service for about half the cost ot a hew one. He suggested that before the tenders were opened the price of this boat be ascertained. Mr Beswick said the boat referred to was said by Mr Clarkson to be unsafe.

Mr Hall—l don’t allow Clarkson to give me information about bouts. Mr Moody—You may depend on it, Mr LeCren would not offer to sell without a good reason. It was resolved by the casting vote of the Chairman that the price of the N.Z.L. and M.A. Co.’s boat should be ascertained.

The requisite information having been sent for, it was found that the price required for the N.Z.L. and M.A. Co.’s boat was £270.

The following tenders were opened:— J. Anderson, Christchurch ... £4lO R. Sparrow and Co., Dunedin ... 430 J. Davidson and Co,, do ... 450 The tender of J. Anderson was accepted. CEMENT RETURNS. It was resolved that a return be laid on the table at the next meeting, shewing the quantity of cement delivered to each of the previous contractors, and the number of cubic yards of concrete made therefrom.

Mr Evans moved—“ That part of the cement shed be temporarily used as a goods shed for bonded goods in transittt and the expense of alterations be authorised.”

The molion was carried, and the meeting adjourned.
