THE MORTUARY CHAPEL.

[to the editor.] Pie, —A writer signing himself “ George Street ” m your issue of last evening seems to be greatly interested rr Mortuary Chapel,” and I think also a little foggy, because in the Jirst place the architect s commission is not included in the £3OO, and in the second place the caretaker’s house is relieved with plaster dressings which 1 believe is recognised ns nothing more or less than an imitation of free stone. “ George Street ” savs, why has the Committee chosen a plan with white stone dressings while the other building (the caretaker’s house) has none ! Well, I should say the Committee has done the correct tiling, because why should we drink gooseberry wine when we can get the real Mackay for the same price ? Why should we indulge in shams at the same cost as realities ? I also fail to sec why the chapel should not be in great contrast with the caretaker’s house ? The chapel no doubt is Gothic, and if “George street” only waits a little he, no doubt, will see a description of the same, like the description of a building I read of a little while ago, the only thing not Gothic about which was the pump, that, I believe, being a Douglas. Perhaps the caretaker’s house being Gothic will have Gothic windows, and a Gothic porch, and perhaps this time the pump will not

be forgotten. But joking aside, if “ George Street ” thought that £3OO was not sufficient for the chapel, ho had the alternative, presuming he is one of the competitors, of saving his paper and time. Far better to do that than send in a design that would cost considerably over the amount specified, thereby taking the credit where no credit is due. The Committee, also, cannot with honesty accept a design that, when tendered for, the cost exceeds the stipulated amount —I am, Ac., ANOTHER STREET.
