TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the above took place last evening at the Council Chambers. Present —His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Jackson, Cullman. Gibson, Filmer, Sherratt, and Shepherd CORKKSI'OXDK N C I!. Was read :—From the Hon Secretary to the Fire Brigade reminding the Council that the supply of boots for the Brigade was now due, and asking that C. Kelly’s tender for measuring uniforms be re-considered. The appointment of Lieut. Murray as Captain of the Brigade, was also notified. Cr. Shepherd thought that several of the members of the Brigade lived out of town and would not therefore hear the tire-bell, in the event of a tire breaking out. Pie thought that this should be looked to before the Secretary’s letter was considered. The Clerk was instructed to obtain a list of the names and addresses of the members of the Brigade. It was then resolved —“ That the Works Committee be authorised to call for tenders for boots for the Brigade, at such time as they may deem advisable.” From Eobert F. Barber, architect, asking on behalf of Mr Edwards’ of the Clarendon Hotel that the Council would grant a slight modification of the Building regulations m view of certain alterations which it was proposed to make to the Clarendon. After discussion, Cr Filmer moved, and Cr Cullman seconded the following resolution —“ That the application of Mr Edwards be granted provided such application is in accordance with the Building Eegulations with regard to studding.” Carried. VALUATION’ ROLL. It was resolved—“ That the Valuation Roll for 1881 be deposited for inspection at the town clerk’s office. Timarn, and that the same be publicly notified.” ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £lO3 lbs general, and £4 18s 3d, waterworks, were passed for payment. GAS.
A discussion arose with reference to the price ruling in Timaru for gas. O. Jackson remarked that lie thought the time had arrived when the company should reduce its figure to the Corporation. He would move—“ That the directors of the Timaru Gas Coal and Coke Company bo respectfully requested to x'educe their rate per 1000 ft to the Corporation.” The motion was seconded by Mr Cullman and carried. Cr Cullman remarked that although the minor streets were plentifully supplied with gas lamps, the main streets where they were really wanted were quite neglected.
Cr Gibson concurred with the last speaker. He would move —“ That the Gas Company be informed that as soon as the company can see their way to extend the gas mains south along King street, the Council are prepared to erect four gas lamps to extend as far as the town belt.” Cr Cullman seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. THK WATKR PICKS. Just before the Council rose a letter was handed in from Air McKemlrick, waterworks contractor, complaining that several of the waterpipos had been found to be cracked and otherwise defective, and intimating that he (Mr McKemlrick) would not be responsible for such defects.
The letter was referred to the engineer with whom his Worship the Mayor promised he would confer in reference to the mutter.
