AUCKLAND RACES.
FIRST EDITION.
The following appeared in owr town edition of last night)
[By Telegraph.] Auckland Dec. 27. Betting—G to -1 on Foul Play, 4to 1 agst King Quail, Maid of Honour, and Yatapa, 8 to 1 agst Vampire, 12 to 1 agst the others. This, the chief event of the meeting, was made remarkable in two ways. It was made a dead certainty for one horse and it resulted in a fatal accident. A fair start was elfected, Libeller going off with a slight lead, but at the turn out of the straight Yatapa went to the front, with King Quail third. On passing the stand after the lirst round, Yatapa led, with Libeller second, Maid of Honor third, Vampire fourth, King Quail Jifth, Ariel sixth, Foul Play seventh. Then the pace mended, and the racing was fast. Foul Play passed the others in rapid succession at the back of the course, the last to surrender being Yatapa. Here Libeller and King Quail came to grief, resulting in one of the most disastrous occurrences at any of the Auckland race meetings. From the best evidence it appears that Libeller fell with his rider Nolan, and King Quail with Carrington fell on top of them. Nolan was killed on the spot. Carrington is recovering. In the meantime the race went on, and the favorite won as he liked, with Maid of Honor second, Ariel third. Time —Imin IGsecs.
