TIMARU WATER SUPPLY.

The following report, prepared at the request of His Worship the Mayor by the water supply engineers, showing the original estimates of tiie Timaru water supply scheme, the expenditure on con tracts already incurred, am! the probable actual cost was submitted at the annual mooting of the Borough Council last evening

“ Water Supply Office, “Timaru, Dec. 22, 18H0. “To His Worship the Mayor, Timaru. “ Slit, —We have the honor to hand you the following report upon the progress made upon the Timaru Water Supply Works up to date. “ Since our appointment in August last we have made the engineering surveys, and contracts have been prepared and entered into for all the works required for bringing the water from the Baroora to the Borough boundary, including the alteration to the Pareora dam and the completion of the service reservoir, with the exception of about 4t! chains of iron limning, the material for which has been ordered in England. “The distance from the Pareora dam to the reservoir, along the aqueduct, is I7| miles, and comprises the following works : Miles. Chains. Open race ... Id 74 Stoneware pipes 1 <sl Wooden flumes 14 Iron flumes ... 4(5 Cast-iron pipes... <>2 Tunnels... ... 22 Stone Culverts, &c. dd.\ Total ... 17 2b\ “ Prom the pipe head near the Reservoir to the Borough boundary is I mile 77 chains. A contract has been let for laying a 14in. cast-iron main for this distance. Prom this point the town reticulation will be commenced. “ The works at present let arc comprised in seventeen contracts, of which a list is given below. “ The contracts have been taken in all cases below our estimates, and very fair progress is being made with all the works. The last let of the race contrasts should be finished by the middle of July next. Should no delay occurr in the arrival of the iron for flumes, the water will probably be running into the Reservoir by the beginning of August, and as «e purpose getting out the reticulation contracts as soon as possible, we hope to have the water in the principal streets of the town as soon as we are able to run it into the Reservoir. “ On our first taking office we prepared an approximate estimate of the cost of the works for your information. We now give in tabulated form a statement showing a comparison between our originnl estimate and the sums for which the contracts have been let, plus the cost of all probable extras, from which it will be seen that there will be a balance of £l4lO Os 7d in favor of our original estimate on the items compared. “ Table showing original estimate and actual cost : Amount of Description Original »'"’irk, a JSS; Estimate, tions. db s. °This includes 40 chains of race and 13 chains of concrete culvert not in original estimate. There will bo in all probability a considerable saving on the original estimate in the cost of the iron flumes, care having been taken to locate them on lines requiring the least amount of tressle work, so that a much less average height will be required than was allowed for in the original estimate. “The town levels which are required before the plans for the reticulation can be prepared will bo commenced as soon as the stone bench mark blocks arc ready ; these are now in the mason’s hands. “ Land plan.—The survey of the race has boon completed by the contractor Mr J. T. Thompson, under the direction of the Chief burveyor.and at an early date all the documents necessary for giving the Borough Council a title to the land will be complete, possession of the water race reserves having already been given the Council by the Minister for Crown Lands. “Trusting that the progress made with the works may be satisfactory to yourself and the Council, “ We have, &c., “ Howard Dodson and iSox.”
