South Canterbury Times, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1880. NEWS OF THE DAY.
A man named Peter Gleeson was arrested at the Hinds for wife desertion, Gleeson will make his appearance before the Ashburton Bench to-morrow.
Some practical jokers have lately been freely indulging in a kind of midnight mischief which is far from creditable. A few days ago a number of newly painted residences and fences including the Hibernian Hotel were smeared in an abominable manner with a composition of boiled lin seed oil and brickdust. Some time between midight on Saturday and daylight on Sunday morning a portion of the fence enclosing Mr Driscoll’s property in North Street was torn down, a number of the palings being deliberately broken. This kind of mischief is strongly suggestive of the utter inadequacy of the police protection which Timaru in common with many other parts of the colony enjoys. To commit the whole town to the charge of a couple of constables at night seems rediculous.
At a meeting of the Baptist Association held last night, it was resolved to invito the Rev C. Bray, Baptist minister, to accept the ministry of the Baptist church held (temporarily) at the Oddfellows Hall. The Kev. Mr Bray is a late arrival from England and is the bearer of very high credentials from Home. Ho has officiated at the Oddfellows’s Hall during the last three Sundays, and his earnest and forcible preaching is highly spoken of.
Our readers are reminded that the reopening soiree in connection with the Congregational Church takes place this evening. After tea the ministers of Timaru and others will addiess the public in the church.
