[Pee "Times” Special Wire.] Mr Des Veeux in a Fix. Auckland, Dec. 6. Mr DesVamx has been knighted as a recognition of his services in connetion with the Bashanas Islands. Having no man-of-war at his service he is unable to proceeed to Fiji. He endeavored to engage ene of the Union Co.’s steamers, but could not conclude terms. The “ Star” suggests that the Hinemoa should be sent if Mr Des Viuux will pay the actual expenses. Caution to Smokers. An Auckland patient in the Hospital is supposed to be dying from cancer caused by the use of a foul pipe. Charges Against a Captain. Wellington, Dec. 6, At the magistrates’ Court the charge against Captain Stewart of the ship Wairoa for alleged smuggling was dismissed. In the charge against the Captain for making false returns of stores to the customs, a fine of £25 was inflicted. The magistrate held that the shipping office was to blame for the error. Stabbing Affray. Dunedin, Dec. 6. During a drunken brawl in a house in Stafford street on Saturday afternoon a fisherman named Win. Pearce stabbed another man named James Mitchell about the face with a sheath knife. Mitchell was taken to the Hospital, and to-day Pearce was committed for trial.
